I've been a cake smash photographer for over 7 years. I have photographed over 150 different first birthday sessions. And I have got some tips for you!
How to Nail Your Kiddo’s Photo Session Without the Stress
Getting ready for your first birthday session? It’s a mix of excitement, chaos, and hoping for that perfect shot! A little planning can go a long way in making sure things go smoothly. Here are some fun dos and don’ts to help capture those magical moments with minimal meltdowns.
What Not to Do Before and During Your Session
-
Say No to Screens
Handing your kiddo a screen with their favorite song or show might seem like an easy fix for happy faces, but prying it away for the perfect captured moment? Not so easy. Screens can lead to distractions, grumpy moods, and eyes glued in the wrong direction. Instead, keep them engaged with fun conversation or a little dance party! -
Don’t Bring the Whole Fan Club
Too many people = too much excitement = one overwhelmed kiddo. A smaller, chill group helps keep the focus on the photos (and makes for a more relaxed atmosphere). -
Keep the Cooing to a Minimum
Everyone wants to get those giggles, but if there are too many voices trying to get your little one’s attention, it can backfire. Let me work my magic—I’ve got tricks up their sleeve for those picture-perfect smiles! -
Easy on the Stimulation
A wild play session right before pictures might seem like a good way to burn off energy, but it can also lead to a crash-and-burn situation. A little calm time beforehand keeps the mood just right. -
Plan Outfits in Advance—Seriously!
Don’t leave outfits to the last minute and end up scrambling! Pick comfy, cute clothes ahead of time, and steer clear of busy patterns or giant logos that might steal the spotlight.
What You Should Do for an Awesome Shoot
-
Pack Snacks & Drinks
A hangry kid is a cranky kid. Bring easy, mess-free snacks and water to keep them happy and photo-ready. -
Bring Their Favorite Toy
A beloved stuffed animal or toy can work wonders for keeping your kiddo feeling safe and happy—plus, it might make for a sweet prop in the photos! -
Have Food or a Bottle Ready
If your little one needs a quick refuel, having a bottle or some food on hand can be a game-changer. -
Test Out the Frosting First
Are doing a cake smash? Give them a little taste test beforehand! If it's their first time having frosting this prep can make all the difference. Gives them a chance to get used to it so they enjoy digging into the cake. -
Bring a Rested, Feed Kiddo
A tired, hungry kid is a recipe for disaster (or at least some grumpy faces). Make sure they’re well-rested and have a full tummy before the session for the best chance at capturing those happy, carefree smiles!
Follow these easy (and fun!) tips, and you’ll be on your way to a stress-free, smile-filled photo session. We'll be ready to rock and roll capturing some adorable, frame-worthy moments!
